Using animals for weed control and highway maintenance, great idea.

Mendota may become the first city in the Valley to use sheep or goats for grass trimming and weed control.

Using sheep and goats as replacements for mowers and herbicides is a growing trend across California, said Rob Rutherford, an animal sciences professor at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and one of the foremost authorities on targeted grazing in the United States.

Hereford Family

By Prosperity Acres On May 16th, 2011

We received a call today from Julie White a writer for the Hereford World Magazine to write a story about our experience loosing our home to the fire.  She was so nice and the gist of the conversation was about the Hereford Family.  Not only did we receive an overwhelming support from our friends and family once we got back home, but the support was really overwhelming as we were at Hereford Junior Nationals showing our cattle when the fire broke out.

Julie asked what did we think of the Hereford Family.  I told her like it is, that they have huge hearts, very caring and compassionate people to go out of their way to help us and didn’t even know us.  They have been extremely supportive of our children and that is why we continue to show and own Hereford cattle is because how much The Family supports children to be all they can be.  Our children have learned a lot about how you treat other people and strangers in particular because of how The Hereford Family has treated us with such an open heart.

All the support, care, compassion and helping hands for the last 10 months of our lives has been such a blessing and very moving.  You covered our backs during this time in our life, know that we have your back in your time of need.  We will continue to raise Hereford cattle and love showing them, but most of all teaching the public why meat is good, especially local meat and that Hereford’s are the efficiency experts.  As Edward goes off to college in the fall to Culinary School he so looks forward to educating people in the restaurant industry about his love for the Hereford Cattle.

Thanks Julie for the call, it was nice meeting you.

Why Buy Local

By Prosperity Acres On May 14th, 2011

When buying from the grocery store versus a local producer what are you looking for in your food, or do you even give buying local a consideration?  Local food from your small local farmer versus big cooperate operations has a sense of nostalgia to it as well.  You get to know the family (and yes I say family because it is a family operation) and what their beliefs are.  Farmers really are stewards of the land and in talking with them and getting to know them you understand how passionate they are about what they raise and how it is raised.  Does it always have to be about the money when you buy a product?  Meaning you are what you eat, if you put food in your mouth that isn’t particularly good for you then your body doesn’t have the fuel to perform optimally.

We sell beef by the 1/4, 1/2, whole or by the specialty cut, buying in bulk is cost effective and doesn’t take up that much room in your refrigerator freezer.  Our goat is sold by whole on the hoof or by the whole cut up, we do periodically have specialty cuts.

Enjoy this chart that explains Buying local and the impact on the environment.

Thank you

We would like to thank Mellomar Golf Course of Owings, MD for purchasing goats this year for environmentally safe and sound weed control.  Enjoy your goats.  You weren’t aware of a Golf Course in Calvert County Maryland.  It is a Regulation 9 hole course and driving range.  They are located at 6215 Scaggs Rd. Lower Marlboro, MD. 20736  410-286-8212.  Give them a visit.
