From our farm to your table!

Enjoy your beef

Today’s article I share with you is an interesting one.  I appreciate the detail the writer expresses about the beef industry as it stands today and into the future.

One of my concerns is why is beef consumption declining?  Is it the prices in the grocery stores?  Is it the scare that vegetarians and so called humane groups are putting on people?  I don’t know but I would like to know.

I receive calls at the farm all the time and the first question the people ask is are the cattle grass fed.  Well of course the cattle are grass fed, even hay is grass at one time.  I really think they mean are the cattle pasture raised, at least I am hoping that is really what they mean.  I think it is a misconception about what classifies as grass fed.  Some consumers aren’t aware that even if cattle are grass fed they can be fed grain and still be considered grass fed by standards.

I applaud people that want to eat beef, I personally wouldn’t enjoy eating dinner if I thought I could never have beef again.  For those that know me up close and personal, I take my wellness very serious and am always reading health journals.  Leading experts on nutrition are convinced that there are people that require protein at each meal of the day in the daily diet.  I personally am one of those people.  Dr. Joseph Mercola is one of those leading experts and he recommends beef as one of the proteins to be eaten.  Thank you Dr. Mercola for doing the research and knowing that SUGAR is what causes health issues and not eating a steak for dinner.  If you are a person that believes you should not eat meat at all, that is your choice.  But you should not tell those that eat meat they are bad people or make movies to try and ruin the farmer that does raise beef cattle.  It is not the cattle’s fault that world population continues to climb and the farmers get pushed back and pushed back.  You have to have a lot of land and the right geographics to provide 100% grass fed cattle.   Please don’t blame the cattle when they belch for causing the hole in the ozone.  We as a society need to take responsibility for that.

We need to realize that life is about choices, so if you chose to eat local and eat fresh that is wonderful, but don’t turn our noses up to those how can’t eat fresh and eat local because they eat meat that has come from a feed lot.  I personally applaud those trying to feed their family well these days with the state of our economy which by the way I do believe the recession is still happening.  It isn’t over in my opinion.

We can’t ask farmers to feed all grass to their cattle and at the same time continue to have urban sprawl at the same rate we are going.  The two will have to collide somewhere.  It always seems to me those that yell the loudest get their way and for some reason it never seems to be the farmer.
